Welcome!
This is a hotspot for questions about becoming an artist & liasing with the industry.
Our main aims are:
DRAG HISTORY SEGMENT
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.
Today, what is or isn't 'Drag' is rather up to the discretion of artists themselves, and there are many philosophical understandings of Drag.
Crossdressing describes the act of wearing clothes that don't align with your perceived gender, whether that be the gender you were assigned, or that which you currently inhabit. This is part of Drag, but we also know that many women are drag queens and many men are drag kings. Not only that, but there is a marked difference in how Drag artists 'crossdress' and how mainstream society 'crossdresses' - that is, usually as a joke at someone's expense.
Drag artists are not humourless, of course, but the best Drag (in this editor's opinion) involves an earnest love and appreciation for the gender they are vacationing as. When mainstream society society crossdresses at the expense of others, it is because it is overly concerned with creating distinct, hostile catagories of 'man' and 'woman', so that it can exploit the latter. Drag artists, as a largely transgressive population where gender is concerned are far more genuine in their recreations of gender, allowing themselves to inhabit the wardrobe, mannerisms, and mindset of another gender. Granting interiority to this other gender allows us to break down perceived differences between genders, even when Drag artists are making jokes at theirs & others' expense. This, I believe, is a key aspect of Drag is, as an artform, and why it is beloved by friends of Dorothy.
Drag that is a superficial joke at the expense of a marginalised group - racially, or in a gendered or class-based fashion - should be critiqued as bad faith Drag and not tolerated.
Like most artforms, there are a range approaches to Drag. One of the widest gaps in the community is that between hobbyists and workers - that is, those who occaisionally participate for fun, fulfillment, or social reasons, and those for whom it is a job. There is no quality gap between these - hobbyists are not by-and-large better or worse than workers (if such a thing was ever quantifiable), but it is important to be aware of the needs of all artists in the Drag sphere.
For more information about this, see Hobby vs Job - Drag as a workplace.
