Choreography
The important thing to remember with choreo is that it's only as good as you'll manage it on stage. This means knowing your limits and rehearsing beforehand, which will not only make the final performance more seamless, but will provide you with confidence before going out on stage.
More than costume changes, complicated dance moves, and knowing your words, one cannot underestimate the importance of confidence. For most, stage fright will mean a front of confidence is a total farce, but the projection of it is crucial to being an entertaining performer . Drag crowds are more forgiving than most, but if you perform visibly upset, anxious, or unenthused, the crowd will feel awkward and helpless.
If choreo is not your strong suit, the 'Park and Bark' is a time-honoured classic. Spend time on your garment, make it beautiful to look at, ensure you know your words, and pick an emotional ballad you can act out with facial expressions alone. A simple costume change can elevate this even further, including something like removing a cape or jacket to reveal rhinestones garnished on the layer below.
For those more confident, focus on the lyrics and use lines that can be acted out to your advantage. A phone can be mimed, a list can be counted on one hand, and begging can be a good excuse for audience interaction. For flair, props like a real phone, a clipboard, or an instrument can be dragged up by being made comically small or large, or rhinestoned into oblivion. Using these props requires rehearsal as much as any other choreography, so questions like 'where will I store it until I bring it out?' and 'what happens if it gets stuck?' are answered in the safety of a private rehearsal space, instead of on stage mid-act.
For intensive dance routines, the outfit you wear must be rehearsed in. This is especially true for outfits with hard or sharp parts, like stilettos or metal piercings. Rehearsing slowly in costume will prevent any serious injuries from happening on stage, and it goes without saying that the garment must be easy to move in. Avoid loose fabric, it being a serious trip hazard.
Try not to compare yourself to others, including those in a lineup with you. A slew of similar artists becomes monotonous for an audience, so don't try to replicate what others are doing on short notice, especially without training. Bring your authentic self to the stage becuse it's the only time people will get to see you.
